The story of the young sociology student who studied a Chicago crack-dealing gang was first introduced in the book Freakonomics. And this book describes in detail how he got access to the gang and his journey after that. As a student intending to take survey on urban poverty, he boldly walks into a known notorious housing project. There he meets and befriends the gang leader JT. After that he spent sevven good years inside the projects under JT's protection, studying and documenting what he saw there.
