The lovely 19 year-old Anne Elliot consents when presented with a marriage proposal by the young Frederick Wentworth. Although charming and ambitious, the naval officer lacked the financial and social status that Anne Elliot's family of the estate of Kellynch Hall was bestowed with. Dissuaded by her vain father Sir Walter, and her friend Lady Russel, who disapprove of the difference in the stature of the two, Anne breaks off the engagement with Wentworth. Seven years later, Wentworth, a successful naval Captain, returns to find his own sister and brother-in-law tenants in the Kellynch estate as the Elliot family ran into financial troubles. Once again, Anne is confronted by her past. The book follows the emotional turmoil and dilemmas in the lives of the two protagonists and the question of reuniting lost love. Jane Austen's last completed novel is a beautiful classic.
