The Palace of Illusions: Draupadi's Perspective

This book came highly recommended by 2 friends and it lived up to the appreciation. I've always been interested in Indian mythology and though this is fiction, Draupadi's take on how she viewed the world at a time when women had the power and yet not was intriguing. My understanding is that they'd have a strong voice but they have a place to voice their thoughts? Maybe, maybe not. I make copious notes when I read, especially when there are nuggets of wisdom I want to refer back to later (the book may not stay, but those excerpts stay with me). I'm quoting directly a few of my favourites: "The power of a man is like a bull's charge while the power of a woman moves aslant, like a serpent seeking its prey. Known the particular properties of your power. Unless you use it correctly, it won't get you what you want." "What is more numerous than grass? The thoughts that rise in the mind of a man." "Who is truly wealthy? That man to whom the agreeable and disagreeable wealth and woe, past and future, are the same." "What is the most wondrous thing on earth? Each day countless humans enter the Temple of Death, yet the ones left behind continue to live as though they were immortal." "When sorrow strikes you, it will strike you harder than your husbands because your ego is more frail and stubborn."

The Palace of Illusions

A grappling read; it takes you through the varied emotions of Draupadi, the central character in the novel. A lovely read.
