Airstrip One is a province in the land of Oceania that is under the rule of the Inner Party. This political group condemns individuality of any sort and keeps the masses under the constant surveillance of the Big Brother. Tyrannical in spirit and highly feared, the Big Brother leads the Party which has a declared propaganda of functioning solely for power and not for the betterment of the people. The story revolves around the life of its prime character, Winston Smith. An officer under the Outer Party, Smith's job is to undertake the revision of history: manipulate and fix the existing documents and records to cover the tracks of the Party. The protagonist works for the Ministry of Truth and ironically is responsible for forging details that would otherwise prove the falsities of the ruling Party. Leading an apparently perfect life with his love interest, Julia, Winston Smith is far from being happy and content. He loathes his work, abhors the government and constantly dreams of revolting against the mighty Big Brother. George Orwell, with ease and simplicity, creates the perfect dystopian world in this story. Through this political fiction, Orwell voices his true opinions against dictatorial and totalitarian rule. The omnipresent yet invisible character of the Big Brother is popular in literary history and is a cult figure. This 1949 book, considered to be one of the best books of all times, is relevant in the real world even after decades of being published.
