Anthem

Anthem is a 1938 novella by Ayn Rand. It is about a man who is not afraid to stand out against everyone to rediscover his individuality. Set in a future dystopian civilization where people are no longer given birth names, but given names according to the group they were born into. The society has progressed to the point that the people have no choice in what they do. Equality 7-2521 who is a curious street cleaner is an exception. He begins to think outside of the collective box and tries to improve this monotonous society. But he is criticized by the group that dictates his society. He meets Liberty 5-3000, a free-thinking and brave girl. She supports Equality and later becomes part of his search for individualism. A book about human identity and freedom, it makes for an enlightening and enjoyable read.
