Difficult Daughters is the story of Virmati, a young Punjabi girl, narrated by her daughter. Set around the time of independence of India, Virmati too fights for the freedom to live life on her own terms. Virmati belonged to an affluent family. She defies her family for the love of a married professor. She ends up marrying the Professor and becoming his second wife. Her husband encourages her to study and be independent within the limits he sets. With time, Virmati grows up from a naive girl to a woman matured by her suffering and experiences.
