Vinuta is a young woman who is married in a middle-class family. Her elder brother-in-law living in the US marries to the 'Dollar Bahu'. They live an extravagant life in US compared to his family in India. Although Vinuta takes good care of her in-laws and her husband, her mother-in-law, Gouramma always compares her to the Dollar Bahu and taunts her. When Gouramma goes to US, she observes other side of life there. She realizes that she will never get the respect there, which she gets in India. She realizes life in India is challenging yet full of love and respect. This novel portrays a very delicate relationship between a lady and her in laws that exist in every Indian family.
