Set in the pre-independent Indian state of Travancore presently in Kerala, this book is a journal of a real life story of Janardhan Pillai who was the last hangman to the king of Travancore. Through this book, Shashi Warrier tries to make the readers understand the emotions that go into a job where your only task is to kill people. The hangman who had retired was persuaded by Warrier to pen down all his thoughts. The hangman believes this will give him a chance to share his struggles of his past with his conscience. This book concentrates on the hangman's life, his choices and the emotions faced by him who is always disapproved by his family and the society. A heart rendering and compelling tale of a hangman.
