My Name is Red' is a tale set in 16th century Turkey, under the rule of Sultan. The book takes the readers through the intriguing world of Turkey's politics and traditions amidst religious and sectarian tensions. It is both a historical fiction and a murder mystery in which the victims as well as the murderer speak directly to the reader. The plot centers round the murder of a miniature artist in the Sultan's court, which is revealed at the beginning of the narration. The novel is further set up in chapters, with each being told by a different narrator including the corpse, the drawing of a horse, a woman who is actually a man, a gold piece and the red color. The obtuse writing style of the author make the intriguing plot all the more interesting to read.
