This is the story of its socially backward, poor and illiterate protagonist. Spanning the period around Indian Independence, the story touches multiple aspects of poverty, social backwardness, and true liberation. Narrated through the eyes of a Neem tree, the story is heart-rending. It was later adapted into an eponymous TV series for Indian television.
