Oliver is born in a workhouse in a small town of England in the early part of 19th Century. His mother dies immediately after his birth. Not knowing anything about his father, the orphan is placed in a child farm. After nine years of mistreatment, the boy is returned to the workhouse to start working. After representing his fellow sufferers in order to get more food, Oliver is punished and is apprenticed to a coffin-maker. After being abused some more, Oliver decides to set out for London. There, he joins company with John Dawkins, who introduces him to a gang of criminals, lead by a cunning master-thief Fagin. With this new kind of fiction by Charles Dickens, he portrays childhood innocence revealing the cruelty with which orphans have been treated and led them through the dark evil side of world. A captivating and engaging classic.
