It is a collection of twelve short stories with the title story being the most famous and also adapted into a Bengali movie by Aparna Sen. All the titles are about the unexpected and inscrutable love stories with their own destinies. The Japanese wife is about how two pen friends - an Indian man and Japanese woman - fall in love with each other, take vows over letters and then live as man and wife without ever setting eyes on each other. Unimaginably imaginative!
