This 1988 novel was awarded the Sahitya Academy award in 1989. The plot of this novel is set against the backdrop of a series of historical events including the Indian freedom struggle, second world war, partition, and the 1963-64 communal riots in Calcutta and Dhaka. The protagonist, a Calcutta boy growing up in a middle-class family, is in love with a girl from a British family that happens to be well-known to his own father. Things however, get complicated when multiple threads of relationships start developing between the two families and the country goes up in flames during the partition.
