Jenny Fields is a nurse who wants to bear a child but does not want a husband. She tends to the injured and invalid Technical Seargent Garp and carries his child. When the child is born, she names him TS Garp after her patient, that being the only connection the baby eventually has with his biological father. The story is an account of life through the eyes of TS Garp who never gained any knowledge about his father. Its a comic yet touching narration of the years of adolescene of Garp, his oddities and emotions. His sexual explorations, his fascination and aversion towards death as well as the innate desire to see himself become a writer are recurrent topics in the book. The story gives a morbid yet a somewhat comic outlook towards the world. For a reader with a taste for an unconventional story and the telling of it, this National Book Award nominated novel is a good read.
