This is the first book by Ayn Rand and close to an autobiography. As the author says, the theme of this classic novel is the struggle of the individual against the state. It captures three years of young Kira's life, her family and acquaintances, set in the 1920's communist Russia. They are all destined to face the varied hardships of post-revolutionary Russia.
