Written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, 'Parineeta' is a popular Bengali novella set in the city of Kolkata, at the turn of the 20th century. Parineeta, is an orphaned thirteen year-old who comes to liv with her uncle, Gurucharan, and his family. Bogged by his responsibilities, Gurucharan has to resort to taking a loan from his wealthy neighbour, Nabin Roy, who has always eyed Gurucharan's mortaged property. Nabin Roy's wife and son Shekharnath grow exceptionally fond of the young and amicable Parineeta. When the young Girin enters Gurucharan's household, supporting the family's finances and advancing friendship to Parineeta, the already possessive Shekharnath feels pangs of jealousy. In a dramatic tumult of emotions one day, Shekhar and Parineeta secretly get married. However, the ordeal of hiding this fact from the two families due to a gap in social and financial status, draws the two apart amidst much anxiety and rage. Years later, Shekarnath and Parineeta face each other again only to rediscover their love.
